We coined a new term on the Oxide and Friends podcast last month (primary credit to Adam Leventhal) covering the sense of psychological ennui leading into existential dread that many software developers are feeling thanks to the encroachment of generative AI into their field of work.

We’re calling it Deep Blue.

— Simon Willison

I’ve been thinking about the “Deep Blue” from various perspectives lately.

Will I remain relevant as a software engineer?

Will my teenage son, aspiring to be a software engineer, face easier or more challenging job prospects compared to my own experience?

Does pursuing a college degree in software engineering still make sense for him (or anyone else aspiring to enter the field)?

Will I be able to secure employment in a software-related role for the next 10-20 years?

Those are just a few off the top of the dome.

On the Space Coast 915Mhz Signal someone shared that while in the DC area the local mesh was doing community events weekly. Someone else pointed out that the Florida Mesh Discord is also doing this weekly. I created a page on Space Coast Mesh for our local mesh users to meetup on the mesh. I also worked on the Open Graph images for the site as well as creating an SVG template for events. I fixed the main image to show more of a mesh by connecting the UFOs to each other, not just the middle one.

After I finished I gave it to Copilot/Claude Sonnet 4.5 and it did it in 45 seconds and essentially did it exactly as I did. It used less functions.

<source:markdown>I decided to do this coding challenge yesterday to help dust off my Python knowledge. I took me about an hour, including figuring out how to disable Copilot and suggestions.

After I finished I gave it to Copilot/Claude Sonnet 4.5 and it did it in 45 seconds and essentially did it exactly as I did. It used less functions.

I finally sat down and watched Prey 🍿. I have been revisiting all the Alien and Predator movies ever since Alien:Earth 📺 came out. I am not sure why I hadn’t watched this sooner. I had heard it was good but for some reason I kept putting it off. With the new Predator: Badlands🍿 out now, I wanted to make sure I was caught up with all the Predator movies. Here is a list ofAlien movies I have watched recently:

Prometheus🍿

Alien: Covenant🍿

Alien🍿

Enjoying the patio with this fall weather! I also recently discovered you can take dual camera photos with FB Messenger. Now to find a separate app to do it.
